1 Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid – Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC-ES)
The CSIC (Spanish Council for Scientific Research) is an autonomous public research body belonging to the Ministry of Education and Science. It has its own legal identity, assets and cash flow, and is independently managed. The CSIC is responsible for 20% of the Spanish international scientific publications. The Real Jardín Botánico (RJB) was founded on 1755, in 1939 it was placed under the CSIC. RJB has the biggest botanical research infrastructure in Spain with ca. 1 000 000 herbarium specimens, the largest library of its kind in Spain and the Garden, with over 5000 species of living plants. The Key person of the RJB involved on Key to Nature is Prof. Santiago Castroviejo, leader of the Flora Iberica and Anthos Projects. Flora Iberica, one of the contributions to Key to Nature, is a project born in 1980 that gathers information of vascular plants (trees and “normal” plants) in the Iberian Peninsula. At the moment there are about 4000 species described. Currently a digital application (e-flora) is being developed as a key that allows us to identify species, which uses as raw material the large work of Flora Iberica. Anthos will provide Key to Nature with thousands of pictures and information about the distribution of the plants in the Iberian Peninsula. Considering that the Iberian Peninsula is a hot-spot of biodiversity in Europe, the RJB contributions make it a very outstanding data provider.

El CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) es una institución pública autónoma perteneciente al Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia. Tiene su propia identidad legal y su propia gestión financiera independiente. El CSIC es responsable del 20% de las publicaciones científicas internacionales de España. El Real Jardín Botánico (RJB) se fundó en 1755, en 1939 se incorporó al CSIC. RJB tiene la mayor infraestructura de investigación en España con aprox. 1 000 000 de especies en el herbario, la mayor biblioteca de su tipo, y el Jardín, con más de 5000 especies de plantas vivas. La persona clave del RJB envuelta en Key to Nature es el Prof. Santiago Castroviejo, coordinador de los proyectos Flora Iberica y Anthos. Flora Iberica, una de las contribuciones a Key to Nature, es un proyecto nacido en 1980 que compila información sobre plantas vasculares (árboles y “plantas normales”) de la Península Iberica. Teniendo en cuenta que la Península Ibérica es uno de los “puntos calientes” de biodiversidad en Europa, la contribución del RJB hace que éste sea un proveedor de datos significativo.
