Origin: Himalayas

Description: Slender tree up to 20m with an ovoid or domed crown. Bark creamy white with pinkish bands, peeling in thin sheets or strips and never developing large black diamond-shaped fissures. Young shoots silvery hairy and warty. Leaves alternate, 7-14cm, roughly ovate but with a tapered tip and rounded or heart-shaped base, margins usually double-toothed. Both surfaces usually have some white or brown hairs, at least in the angles of the veins. Slender male catkins 10-15cm, pendulous and rather knobbly, yellow; female catkins 2-3cm, erect or pendulous. Fruiting catkins pedulous, breaking up when ripe to release small, winged seeds.
