Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus)

Origin: S. & C. Europe
Description: A wide-spreading tree up to 35m, the crown often wider than high. Leaves opposite, palmately 5-lobed, the lobes coarsely toothed. Flowers appearing with the leaves, yellowish green, hanging in separate male and female clusters 6-12cm long. Fruits winged, in pairs 3.5-5cm long, the wings making an angle of c. 90 degrees.
Comments: Although native to S. And C. Parts of Europe, the sycamore is widely planted and naturalised elsewhere. A fast-growing, invasive species with wind-borne fruits that disperse widely.
