Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum)

Maple family (Aceraceae)

Origin: North America

Description: Tall tree up to 35m, the crown spreading, with slender, upwardly arching branches. Leaves opposite, palmately 5-lobed, the lobes narrow, deeply and irregularly toothed, green above, silvery hairy beneath. Flowers appearing before the leaves, green or red, lacking petals, the short-stalked males and long-stalked females in separate clusters. Fruits 5cm long, paired, winged, the wings green, strongly veined and making a narrow angle.

Comments: Introduced to the UK as an ornamental species for its silvery foliage.
