Origin: E. Europe & Asia

Description: Tree up to 30m with a broadly domed crown of upwardly angled branches. Twigs downy white at first, becoming green and hairless. Leaves alternate, heart-shaped but asymmetric at the base, sharply toothed, dark green above, densely silvery hairy beneath. Flowers 6 to 10 in pendulous clusters attached to a yellowish, oblong, wing-like bract, 5-petalled, yellowish or white and sweet-scented. Fruit 6-12mm long, ovoid, downy, with 5 stout, longitudinal ridges.
