Siberian Crab
From KeyToNature
Malus baccata
Rose family (Rosaceae)
Origin: N. & E. Asia
Description: Tree up to 15m, usually with a low, spreading crown. Twigs have short, spur-like side shoots which may be thorn-like. Leaves alternate, ovate, finely toothed, hairless or hairy only on the veins beneath. Flowers 4cm across, in clusters of 3 to 7, pink in bud but white when fully open. Fruit 7-10mm, globose, bright red or rarely yellow when ripe.
Comments: Unlike most other species of Malus, Siberian crab has sepals which fall from the ripening fruit. As a consequence, the fruits are easily mistaken for cherries (Prunus species).
