Origin: North America

Description: Tree up to 25m with an open crown. Leaves alternate, 9-15cm long, oblong to elliptical in outline, pinnately lobed with 3 to 4 pairs of spreading, toothed lobes, glossy and hairless above, paler and with tufts if hairs in angles of veins beneath. Acorns solitary, the lower half enclosed in a cup 15-20mm diameter which has scales closely pressed together.

Comments: The acorns of this species ripen in the second year. The leaves turn bright red in autumn.
