Origin: North America

Description: Tree up to 35m with a broadly domed crown dark red twigs and silvery bark. Leaves alternate, 12-22cm long, oblong in outline, pinnately lobed, each lobe reaching about halfway to the midrib and with 3 slender teeth, matt green and hairless above, grey and with tufts of brownish hairs in angles of veins beneath. Acorns seated in a very shallow cup 18-25mm diameter which has hairy scales closely pressed together.

Comments: The acorns of this species ripen in the second year. The leaves turn rich, deep red in autumn.
