Origin: W. & C. Europe

Description: Tree up to 10m. Twigs with only a few thorns 6-15mm long. Leaves alternate, 1.5-6cm, with 3-5 lobes which are toothed only at the base and usually reach less than halfway to the midrib. Flowers in clusters, 15-24mm diameter, 5-petalled, white, with 2 to 3 styles. Fruits fleshy, 6-13mm long, globular, deep red; seeds 2.

Comments: There are various cultivars of this species. Two of the double-flowered forms are commonly planted in streets: cv ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ has red flowers; cv ‘Punicea Flore Pleno’ has pink flowers.
