Manna Ash (Fraxinus ornus)

Olive family Oleaceae

Origin: C. & S. Europe

Description: Tall tree up to 25m, with a domed crown. Bark smooth or slightly furrowed. Twigs clearly flattened at the nodes. Winter buds very large, grey or brown. Leaves opposite, up to 30cm long, pinnately divided into 5-9 leaflets each 3-10cm long, oval, pointed, irregularly toothed, with white or brownish hairs on the veins beneath. Flowers white, fragrant, with 4 narrow petals 5-6mm long, in large clusters appearing after the leaves. Fruit 1.5-2.5cm long, extended above the seed into a narrow wing and hanging in dense clusters.
