  • We came up with schema based our community needs
    • not influenced by knowledge of GBIF future structure or potential constraints
    • it is for the wider community
  • Asked GBIF for overview structure to determine barriers/constraints in implementation
    • IPT version 1 implementation of MRTG schema may be a barrier – not all fields may be implemented
    • Current question of Darwin Core core fields with MRTG schema around it, or just MRTG schema
  • GBIF described has future tools
    • feedback is possible (annotation), as packet, or potentially (but not planned for at moment) a filtered push
    • GBIF communities want to apply a fitness ranking system
    • evolving system
    • GBIF will build other, specialized thematic portals,,
    • etc...
  • We also have great feedback, interesting views, and comments on schema that we can take back to our groups to improve our own systems

  • We are a long way from identifying, much less eliminating, barriers to publication and use of the MRTG schema in GBIF services.
  • The task group should have an end-to-end example of the publication and use of information.

The scenarios which we began to identify on Thursday are a good start towards creating presentations for providers, producers and consumers that will help them to decide on participation. The Secretariat may find it useful to have a collection of detailed scenarios for other projects that help stakeholders understand how their contributions improve the overall state of biodiversity knowledge.

  • The community needs to adopt the terminology of "GBIF Secretariat" as different from "GBIF". The Secretariat staff and other participants can increase understanding in the role of both organizations by consistently making this distinction.
