Learning about grassland plants in Podnanos
At the end of April 2009 Mrs Irena Kodele Krašna offered us to work with our school presenting us the identifying tool for grassland plants. After all the preparation and organisation we finally welcomed the day in june to use that tool in Podnanos.
Mrs Irena Kodele Krašna presented us the Identifying tool for grassland plants in Podnanos (in Slovene) and explained us some technical terms that it contains. The children were pre-divided into groups according to their age, skills and interests. Finally we set off to the chosen lawn in Podnanos. Using the tool, each group had to identify at least ten grassland plants, glue them onto paper and write down the place, the date, the name and the names of the group members. The teachers and Mrs Irena Kodele Krašna helped the children both professionally and technically.
After the practical part we returned to school and presented our work to other teachers and pupils. We also showed them the identified plants and the analyses of our team work. Both the pupils and the teachers were very happy with those activities.
Our findings are:
- Making mixed age groups was a great idea as the children helped each other; there was no rivalry between classes, because there were children from different classes in each group.
- Using the identifying tool children found out many grassland plants, many technical terms and plant parts which are used to identify the samples. The best teams identified more than 20 species of plants.
- Cooperating in the project gave the branch school in Podnanos a very good Identifying tool for grassland plants on the lawn in Podnanos, which we and Mrs. Irena Kodele Krašna will continue updating, as we have already found some plants that were not yet included. The identifying tool is already available online here.
- Participating in this project enables us to cooperate in international projects.
I want to express gratitude to Mrs. Irena Kodele Krašna and my colleague teachers Miss Marjana Ukmar and Mrs. Marija Nabergoj for extremely good team work.
