Help:Contents
In its simplest form, editing a Wiki page is like writing a plain text email. In addition, certain conventions are used for formatting. The most important convention is that an empty line (i. e. pressing the return/enter key twice) creates a paragraph. Many other conventions are fairly intuitive, such as enclosing a line in several equal-signs ("=") before and after text to mark it as a heading, starting a line with a "*" to make it a bulleted list item, or creating a horizontal line with four hyphens in a line. Other conventions are less obvious, such as using double or triple apostrophes (') for italic and bold formatting, respectively. The most important convention in a Wiki is how to link to other wiki or web pages; these are discussed below under "Linking".
Please note that you can do very constructive work on the Wiki without understanding some of the more complex formatting rules. Much of the information can be picked up by looking at examples. Do not be worried if your formatting is not perfect, someone else can jump in an improve it later. A very important wiki rule is: "Be bold", do things rather than ask whether you are allowed to do things.
1 Linking
- Links to a Wiki page are enclosed in double brackets ("[[]]")
- If you want to modify the text that is shown, add a vertical bar and your text. Example: [[Help:Contents|Link to this help page]] produces Link to this help page.
- Links to external URLs are enclosed in single brackets ("[]")
- If you want to modify the text that is shown, add a blank and your text. Example: [http://www.keytonature.eu/wiki/Help:Contents This help page as a URL] produces This help page as a URL.
