Description: Tree, reaching 25m but often much smaller. Leaves opposite, 4-12cm, palmately 3 lobes lobed, occasionally 5-lobed, the lobes with rounded teeth towards the tip. Flowers appearing with the leaves, yellowish-green, males and females mixed in erect clusters. Petals 5. Fruits dry, 2-4cm long, paired, the membranous, green or red-tinged wings spreading horizontally to form an angle of 180°.
Comments: A colourful tree, the leaves pinkish when young, becoming dark green before turning bright yellow or reddish in autumn.
Field Maple grows best on chalky soils.
