Origin: North America

Description: Tree up to 25m high, with an open crown of brittle branches. Twigs reddish-brown,with a pair of spines at the base of each leaf stalk which persist after the leaves have fallen. Leaves alternate, pinnate with 3 to 10 pairs of oval to elliptical leaflets. Flowers pea-like, white, in pendulous clusters 10-20cm long. Fruit a smooth, reddish-brown pod 5-10cm long.

Comments: Varieties with distinctly yellowish-green foliage are common.
