Origin: Mediterranean

Description: Evergreen tree up to 25m, with a broadly domed crown. Twigs grey-brown, hairy. Leaves alternate, 3-7cm, thick and leathery but not stiff, glossy green above, felted with white or greenish hairs beneath. The margins are wavy, with short spiny teeth in mature trees though the spines are often absent in young growth. Acorns in clusters of 1 to 3, each seated in a cup 12mm in diameter which has close-pressed scales thickly covered with white hairs.

Comment: Also known as holm oak The acorns ripen in the first year.
