Caucasian Lime
Tilia x euchlora
Lime family (Tiliaceae)
Origin: Garden origin?
Description: Tree 15-20m with a columnar crown, the higher branches upwardly angled, the lower ones rather weeping. Leaves alternate, 5-10cm, very broadly ovate, the base often heart-shaped on one side of the midrib and cut straight across on the other, toothed, glossy green above, paler and with pale brown hairs in the angles between the midrib and the main veins beneath. Flowers 5 to 7 in pendulous clusters attached to a wing-like bract which is widest above the middle, 5-petalled, yellow and sweet-scented. Fruit 6-9mm long, ovoid, tapering at both ends, with pale brown hairs and 5 longitudinal ridges.
Comments: Thought to be a hybrid between small-leaved lime and Crimean lime. It is less prone to insect attack than other limes.
