Origin: Europe

Description: Small tree up to 17m high with unpleasant smelling bark. Leaves alternate, slightly leathery, oblong to elliptical with a short, tapering tip, margins with fine, slender teeth; dark green above, paler and sometimes with whitish hairs in the axils of the veins beneath. Flowers fragrant, 15 to 35 in cylindrical spikes 7-15cm long. Petals 6-9mm long, broadly ovate, white. Ripe fruit 6-10 across, shiny black and very sour.
